Denim is a wardrobe staple that never goes out of style, but I know it can be the hardest item of clothing to buy and we all have a love hate relationship with them! Different denim shapes serve different purposes and flatter various body types in unique ways. Knowing how to style each shape can elevate your look and make your outfit feel fresh and intentional. This guide breaks down five popular denim fits, slim/straight ankle grazers, flare, barrel, wide, and skinny, with practical styling tips for each.
Slim/Straight Ankle Grazers
Slim/Straight ankle grazers are classic and versatile. They fit close to the body without being too tight, and their cropped length hits just above the ankle. This cut works well for most body types and is perfect for showcasing your footwear. They are also great for a wet rainy day as they will not be soaking up all that rain water.
Purpose:
Create a clean, streamlined silhouette
Highlight shoes and ankles
Offer a polished yet casual look
How to Style:
Pair with loafers or ankle boots for a smart-casual vibe
Add a tucked-in blouse or fitted tee to emphasize the slim fit
Layer with a blazer or leather jacket for a great office look.
For warmer days, sandals or trainers work well with this cut
Slim ankle grazers are ideal for those who want a timeless look that transitions easily from day to night. They are never likely to date and I have them in a mid blue wash, black and leopard print too!

Flare Jeans
Flare jeans widen from the knee down, creating a dramatic gorgeous silhouette that balances wider hips and elongates the legs. This shape has come back big from the '70s and is one of my most fave fits right now! I think it's great for the office or out in the evening with a heel but make sure the heel allows the hem to just sweep the floor to ensure that gorgeous flare shape really sits neatly and does not crumple.
Purpose:
Add volume and movement to the lower leg
Balance proportions for pear-shaped bodies
Create a retro boho 70's vibe, think Chloè
How to Style:
Wear with higher heels or wedges to enhance the leg-lengthening effect
Pair with fitted tops or bellow blouses - ensure to tuck!
Layer with elegant long coats or a neat blazer, keep it smart.
Avoid bulky shoes that can overwhelm the flare
Flare jeans work best when you want to add a bit of flair and personality to your outfit while maintaining a flattering shape. I always think this style commands respected attention..great for commanding respectful attention. I would absolutely wear these to a meeting where I want to get the answer I am after!

Barrel Jeans
Barrel jeans have a unique silhouette that is wider at the thigh and tapers slightly toward the ankle, resembling a barrel shape. This fit offers a relaxed yet structured look and has been so popular with mny clients. Although it may look an unusual shape on the hanger it fits the body so well. It's particularly good for ladies that find it hard to get the hips and waist fitting well in jeans. It's really worth trying a few pairs from various brands. I have selected Oliver Bonas for this blog as they are in Stock (!) but other brands to try are M&S, River Island and Mint Velvet for Barrel styles. Free People are also great!
Purpose:
Provide comfort with a stylish twist
Offer a modern alternative to straight or skinny jeans
Highlight the natural shape of the legs without clinging
How to Style:
Combine with fitted tops or bodysuits to balance the relaxed fit
Add ankle boots or heels for an evening or day look.
Layer with cropped jackets or cardigans to define the waist
This style should be an ankle grazer jean style.
Barrel jeans are perfect for those who want comfort without sacrificing style. I've added a little fishnet ankle high for some fun detail at the ankle!

Wide-Leg Jeans
Wide-leg jeans are roomy from the hips down to the hem, offering a casual and relaxed silhouette. This shape is ideal for creating a laid-back, fashion-forward look. I do love this style and its great for a WFH day or just when you need to run around and get chores done!
Purpose:
Provide maximum comfort and freedom of movement
Create a bold, statement silhouette
Balance broader shoulders or create curves for straighter figures
How to Style:
Pair with fitted or cropped tops to avoid overwhelming your frame
Wear with trainers, platform style footwear or chunky loafers
Tuck in tops to define the waistline
Add a belt for extra shape and polish
Wide-leg jeans are great for casual days when you want to feel comfortable and stylish at the same time. Try and go for a lighter weight denim to stop then being too stiff and heavy. You want them loose and floaty.

Skinny Jeans
Skinny jeans hug the body from waist to ankle, many of you think its time to ditch them from your wardrobe but I actually think we still need them in our lives as an option! They are a go to because of their versatility and you can literally wear them with every style of footwear! Apart from a Reebok Classic! To hit the trend of the moment an 80's style slouch boot would be great!
Purpose:
Accentuate the shape of the legs
Great jeans for a wet day, neat and will stay out of puddles
Serve as a base for layering with longer tops or oversized sweaters
How to Style:
Pair with oversized sweaters or relaxed tops for contrast
Wear with ankle boots, pumps, cowboy boots and heels for a night out
Layer with long coats or cardigans for a balanced silhouette
Add statement accessories to draw attention upward
Skinny jeans are a staple for anyone who wants a clean, fitted look that works for casual and dressier occasions. With enough stretch they cam be a really comfy jean. Honestly.

Hopefully, this serves as a reminder of the available shapes, how to style them, and the best occasions to wear them! There's definitely a style for every purpose, and knowing these will help you dress more quickly and efficiently in the morning!
